Susan Otterson Knitwear

Madison, Wisconsin

Clothing designer Susan Otterson has followed a long line of women that create beauty with thread, yarn and fabrics. Having grown up with a grandmother and mother that sewed for their families, it comes as natural for her to pick up a needle and build something wonderful.

Of strong northern European immigrant roots, Susan makes clothing that lasts, stitches that hold, with fabrics that withstand use.

For over thirty years Susan has quietly built a following of like minded customers who view as important her sense of quality, design, and function. She has a passion for exquisite fabric and yarns, and loves the challenge of sculpting these fabrics into a garment. The element of surprise in her work is ever present, as in unexpected textural combinations, or playful linear thread drawings. Susan is passionate about working in rich, sumptuous colors, textures, and patterns using soft, warm yarns. A friend and expert seamstress once told her to “do it the right way,” and these words have been her guiding principal ever since, in the construction of her garments. Her studio in Southern Wisconsin is a nest of beautiful fabrics, machinery, and inspiration.

Art exhibitions around the country have been her mode of selling to customers for many years; now she is excited to expand this coterie to you.
